Just Plain Odd

May 7th, 2010 Comments off

I’ll occasionally come back to the player on this site, listen to my old stuff and think, “That’s not half bad!” Yet other times (the majority of the time, actually), I think about how much I should have improved a track before releasing it into the wild, and that it was without a doubt below par for public consuption. Any other artists out there go through this see-saw effect when reviewing your old(er) works?

Game Review: Strong Bad’s Cool Game 4 Attractive People – ep. 1

February 9th, 2010 Comments off

SB w/ hand in the air.

Fist pumping for the roof's sake...awesome.

Available for: PC, Wii

“Rhino… Rhino Feeder…I was dreaming about… muffins.”
And ‘like a burning car or an imploding star’, Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People Episode 1 (a.k.a., SBCG4AP-E1) begins!. At the time of writing, the Brother’s Chap (Matt and Mike Chapman; creators of the web series) have long since had their heyday on the Net, which is to say, approximately 8 years ago.  If that happens to be the case that you’ve missed the phenomenon, pull up a chair to your favorite Flash-capable computer (iPads steer clear!) and prepare to be amused while you get up to snuff with the shirtless, boxing-gloved, email-mocking Lucha Libre and the band of accompanying nutters in that universe.  I say this mostly as a warning, since the humor presented in Tell Tale‘s translation of the series into the videogame realm relies heavily on your intimate knowledge of’s cast.

All caught up?  Proceed with the awesomeness!

Coiled Up…

New music posted!

My instrumental-only cover of Lacuna Coil’s original song “Swamped” from their album Comalies (the song is also available for download in Rock Band) has been posted to the right.  It is currently the 2nd song in the list.

Remember: I am looking for singers to mix into this track, so if you think you’ve got the chops (and a mic), record a raw track of yourself singing any of the parts (no reverb, no additional sounds) and I will mix them in and post that track here as well!  Think of this as a tribute to one of the hardest working bands in the world.

Make an MP3 of your vocals, and send them to my email address: rtoomim (at) cagames (dot) com.

Learning how to Rock

August 21st, 2009 Comments off

I decided a couple of days ago that I’d make a concerted effort at recreating a rock song. Seeing as I’ve never composed a full song in this genre on my own, it’s a substantial task.

I chose Lacuna Coil’s song “Swamped” as my subject, and I’ve nearly completed the instrumental part of it. Since I’m not a great singer, I’m not yet sure if I’ll attempt to get that part in the final mix. So, if any of you out there are singers in the Austin area (liking Lacuna Coil would help), and you feel like being part of a fun experiment you should get in touch with me!

Edit: Even if you’re NOT in the Austin area, and you like Lacuna Coil enough to record yourself singing this track, I’ll welcome the submission and attempt to include it in the recording.

Even if I am unable to get singers, I’ll be posting the version of the backing track that I’ve created sometime soon. Looking forward to your critiques!

The Crazy Week

August 9th, 2009 Comments off

This article will serve as an apology to myself for having NOT posted a damn thing last week.  I’ll make sure to change that this week :P

<sarcasm>Way to go, self.  </sarcasm>

Lots of stuff happened, none of which should have kept me from getting something done here.  Looks like there is a distinct possibility I’ll be able to name one of the games for the iPhone that I worked on, as it has been submitted to Apple for the App Store, and the developers would like to talk to me about doing a sequel/sequels!  That’s exciting news!

Did another fun class for some students at GameCamp here in Austin at Austin Community College near Highland Mall.  It’s always fun to attempt to both control and entertain a class of 10-17 year olds!  I actually mean that…it’s usually a fun challenge, but I can imagine that task getting fairly trying and old  after you’ve done it for more than a few months, day in and day out.  I feel for all you middle and high school teachers!  Get to know the GameCampers I taught here: GameCamp! – Play. Work. Learn.

Also, there is a new CryptoCast up!  That took a good portion of our evening on Friday (the 7th), and you can listen to it here.  If you’re really curious to watch us in action instead of just listening, you can check the archive of the show here.

Sometimes, all you need are BIG DRUMS…

EWQL's "Play" being used with Ableton Live

…and that is exactly what you’ll get with my newest work to be posted: “Big Ko Monster”. This short piece is ready for your next blockbuster action film/game trailer, complete with heavy percussive sections while leaving room for that poignant moment when the hero finally understands just how deep the rabbit hole goes before he proceeds to jump in head first!

Welcome to! If you’re here on a quest for audio, please have a listen to the samples listed in the Flash player.

Here you’ll find some chronicles of my work and discoveries I’ve made about myself as a musician, and possibly my programmer half.
